Poor Waste Management; Major Environmental Problem in Ilorin

Poor Waste Management; Major Environmental Problem in Ilorin

By: Jimoh Waliu Arowolo

Poor waste management has embedded communities in Ilorin metropolis and proper attention has not been given to this issue by the government or any of the stakeholders in the communities. It is no longer a misery that residents of the communities are not making proper use of the insufficient waste containers provided by the government for waste management in places like, Sango, Oja-Oba, Ipata, Taiwo, among others.

This is a serious environmental threat that can lead to critical conditions on the economy and people living in the environment with situations like infectious diseases, land and water pollution, obstruction of drainages, and loss of biodiversity.

There has been serious disasters in the community which are as a result of poor waste management, like flooding from blocked drainages which has resulted in loss of lives and properties.

Series of cases of people with infectious diseases like cholera and diarrhea among others has been reported in most of these communities in the recent years.

As a result of this, there is need for the Kwara state government, stakeholders, perpetrators, and victims to make provision of public awareness, learning and compliance, credible investment and proper machinery on environmental related issues to prevent the occurrence or limiting the damages of any future circumstances that might rise from poor waste management in the community and state at large.
